Rella’s Kinderklassen (former Lieder & Geschichten) was developed by Swiss born Barbara Rellstab in 2011. As a former singer and dancer, she was looking for a fun German story time and music class for her 2-year old.  As she could not find anything in Manhattan, she decided to start developing her own first rate and fun classes for the German Language Community in New York.

Rella’s Spielhaus currently offers 13 weekly German Kinderklassen in Manhattan (three different locations). The program is designed to expose children to the German language and culture using picture books, songs, acrobatics, dancing, instruments, “Kniereiter” for all the little children and added fun reading and writing projects for the 6–8 year olds.

We encourage both child and parent to (re)-enter the playful world of music, movement and the German language and culture. It is a wonderful platform for the Bi- and Tri Lingual New York families to incorporate German into their lives. The various classes hope to serve as inspiration to be continued at home and the program already has created dozens of friendships that will last a life time.

Rella’s Kinderklassen for 0–2 year olds (Minis)

This might be the first German Class your small child will take! We sing together and (re)-learn the rhymes, songs and Kniereiter you remember from your childhood.

We make animal sounds, play with balls, bells and rhythm sticks and look at picture books together. At the end of the class we all calm down for a comforting German lullaby. Our Mini’s Classes encourage both child and parents (and care giver) to have fun with the German language and music, a wonderful inspiration to be continued at home and the beginning of your child’s life-long connection to the German language culture!

Rella’s Kinderklassen for 3–5 year olds (Midis)

This 80 min class starts in the circle with our signature welcome song. We introduce the theme of the week; we count, learn the German Alphabet; get to know the days of the week, months of the year etc.

At the  end of circle time, we start engaging the children in conversations, encourage them to tell us about their lives in German. The second part of the class consists of German rhymes, ball games and and a short choreography. We read a story and discuss the words that the children are not familiar with. The 3rd part of the class consists of arts and crafts: We cut, draw, mold a character that we encountered in the story. And at the end we come together in the circle and sing our beloved “Tschuess -Tschuess” song.

Rella’s Kinderklassen for 6–8 year olds (Maxis)

This 80 min class starts in the circle with our signature welcome song. We introduce the theme of the week; we count, learn the German Alphabet; we learn how to spell the days of the week, months of the year etc.

We also discuss distinct differences of our lives in New York versus in a German-speaking country. (i.e: Food, metric system, transportation). The second part of the class consists of German rhymes, ball games and a funky choreography put together by Csilla. The children read a story together and we discuss and write down new vocabulary. The third part of the class consists of arts and crafts: We cut, draw or mold a character that we encountered in the story. And at the end we come together in the circle and sing our beloved “Tschuess – Tschuess” song.

Rella’s Kinderklassen for 9-11 year olds (Megas)

This 80 min class starts in the circle with our signature welcome song in the big group. We introduce the theme of the week and then we go into the basics:

In the first part of the class, we learn to count (basic math problems are introduced), learn how to sound out and apply the German Alphabet; we learn how to spell the days of the week, months of the year etc. We also discuss distinct differences of our lives in New York versus in a German-speaking country. (i.e: Food, metric system, transportation). It is vital that the group understands that they can learn from each other and use the teacher to check back with.

The second part of the class consists of learning how to read and write. The children read a story together and we discuss and write down new vocabulary,. Or we discuss topics that are relevant to their lives, i.e. dream careers.

The third part of the class consists of arts and crafts: We cut, draw or mold a topic that we either talked about or found in a story. And at the end we come together in the circle and sing our beloved “Tschuess – Tschuess” song.

Homework

For this age group, we have started giving homework. This is a wonderful way for the parents to connect with the children. The more the children feel that they are embedded in our language and cultural community, the more motivation they will show.

Testimonials

"Lieder & Geschichten ist eine perfekte Gelegenheit, lang vergessene Kinderlieder und Reime wiederzuentdecken und Kindern spielerisch die deutsche Sprache beizubringen. Leiterin Barbara Rellstab bereitet mit viel Animation, gezielt ausgewaehlten Spielsachen und altersgerechten Turnuebungen den Kindern eine tolle Stunde zum Mitmachen und Mitlachen!"Christine (Mom of Max, 15 Months)

"Lieder & Geschichten provides a wonderful, relaxed environment for kids to start taking in German Kinderlieder. Barbara is incredibly intuitive in how she handles the kids, she has an uncanny ability to know what support they need from her to feel comfortable participating, and joining in the fun! The balance of singing, dancing and storytelling has my son fully engaged & visibly enjoying the entire hour of each class."Teresa (Mom of Milo, 12 Months)

"Since its launch at its Midtown location my almost 2 year old and I have been attending "Lieder & Geschichten" with Barbara. My little-one loves going there. When I say "Komm, wir gehen spielen mit Brabara!" and start singing one of her songs ("Hoppe, hoppe Reiter...") he starts scrambling for his coat. Barbara has a beautiful voice and almost acts out the German stories she reads to the kids. Beside reading stories, we sing the "old" German Kinderlieder that I grew up with. In addition we dance in circles and try some tumbling while counting, naming body parts, the clothes we wear and so on - all in German of course! While I speak German to my children at home, I feel that it is important to meet with other German speakers, so the children hear German spoken, sung, rhymed by other people as well. "Lieder & Geschichten " offers a delightful way of interacting and meeting with other German speakers and kids."Kai (Mom of Yanni, 23 Months)
