"Tips" are events and classes happening in our community, but not organized by CityKinder. Have fun!

College selections and applications are important topics for families with teenagers due to the pressure and many unknowns. However, for international parents who never went through the process themselves this topic can be daunting. Our partner A-List Education will shed some light for us on on the many points to consider and when it’s the right time to start preparing (spoiler alert – much earlier than you think!):

Director of College Advising and former Application Reader Natasha de Sherbinin will demystify the College application process, offering tips to parents of teens of any age. Parents of High School students will come away from the seminar with an idea of items to take action on now, while parents of younger students will get insight into how they can best prepare for the arduous application process over the coming years. Director of Tutoring Dory Schultz will also provide a brief rundown of US admissions exams. This seminar is perfect for families who may not be familiar with the complicated US admissions process and those who would like to brush up on recent developments.

The following topics will be discussed:

  • Key Application Components
  • Standardized Tests
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Building the College List
  • Characteristics to Consider
  • Researching Colleges
  • Insider Perspective on Admissions
  • Parent’s Role
  • Useful Resources
  • Takeaways
  • A-List Education
  • Q & A

Speaker:

Natasha de Sherbinin was born and raised in Manchester, Massachusetts. She earned a master’s degree in higher education from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a bachelor’s degree from Colby College, where she majored in Human Development and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. Following college, Natasha joined Teach For America and moved to Denver, Colorado to teach Spanish and guide high school students through the college application process. Natasha also spent a year teaching English in Gijón, Spain, and two summers leading high school students on Spanish travel programs throughout the country.

Dory Schultz, originally from Los Angeles, CA, is A-List’s Director of Tutoring and one of A-List NY’s senior tutors and college advisors. As a Gluck Fellow at UCLA, Dory began tutoring math and discovered his passion for helping students not only succeed academically, but improve their focus, discipline, and self-confidence. Since joining A-List, Dory has personally helped hundreds of students get accepted to their dream schools through SAT/ACT instruction and application and essay advising (his class of 2018 included acceptances to Columbia, Cooper Union, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, NYU, UVA, Northeastern, Northwestern, Carnegie Mellon, Vanderbilt, Syracuse, Brandeis, UT Austin, Tulane, UMass Amherst, and others) and is proud to have indirectly contributed to the success of many more by training new tutors, presenting to teachers all over the country, writing curriculum, and producing A-List materials for our online portal. Drawing from his experience teaching high school math to a diverse body of students, he is particularly in demand as a tutor for students with learning differences who appreciate his patience and ability to break down complicated concepts. Outside of A-List, Dory is an active performer of opera and oratorio and enjoys travel, photography, and funny cat videos.
