The Deutsches Haus children’s classes are designed for bilingual children ages 1 to 15, with the aim of providing an environment that fosters existing German language skills and encourages acquisition. Raising children to be bilingual can be difficult; without a group of bilingual peers, children may find the second language frustrating. Deutsches Haus children’s classes provide an exciting alternative. The lessons are interesting and fun, and vocabulary is introduced as part of a thematic unit.
Toddlers (ages 1 to 2 and 3 to 4) gain exposure to the language through stories, lots of German songs, games, and craft projects. The primary level (ages 5 to 6) encourages literacy development, at the elementary levels (ages 9 to 10 and 11 to 12), we work on expanding vocabulary, gradually focusing more on orthography and grammar, and at the teenager level (ages 13 to 15) we focus on reading, reading comprehension, and on thinking and integrating the language process to help students improve their written communication skills. All classes are held in German.
Deutsches Haus also offers a variety of cultural events, including a German Kasperltheater, a St. Martin lantern parade, and celebrations for both St. Nikolaus and Easter.
